Titomanlio, MD, PhD SECTION 1 A 4-year-old girl was seen in the pediatric emergency department because of a first generalized tonic-clonic seizure that occurred at school. The seizure was preceded by a sudden, prolonged attack of unconsciousness, lasted 5 minutes, and was followed by drowsiness. The parents were first cousins of Algerian descent. She had an unremarkable family history. Pregnancy and delivery were uneventful. At age 4, she underwent bilateral cochlear implantation for congenital sensorineural deafness. Neurologic examination was notable for deafness and marked agitation, which was reported to be usual by her parents. Psychomotor development was mildly delayed.

JLNS has been shown to occur due to homozygous mutation in KCNQ1 or KCNE1. There have been a few clinical case reports on JLNS in Korea; however, these were not confirmed by a genetic study. We i...

Sensorineural deafness inherited as a tissue specific mitochondrial disorder.

We present here a large Israeli-Arab kindred with hereditary deafness. In this family 55 deaf subjects (29M, 26F), who are otherwise healthy, have been identified and traced back five generations to one common female ancestor. The deafness is progressive in nature, usually presenting in infancy and childhood. Audiometry on six deaf and seven unaffected subjects was consistent with severe to pro...
